Tipping Point UK is looking for an experienced fossil finance organiser to support grassroots groups to organise at the intersection of fossil finance and other liberation struggles, such as migrant justice, queer liberation, class justice and Palestinian liberation. The aim of this work will be to support these groups to end the financing of fossil fuels and to build a coalition of groups working to target the finance sector across liberation struggles.

Location: Flexible, remote working from anywhere in the UK with occasional travel required. The candidate must reside in the UK and have permission to work in the UK.

Contract:   28 hours / 4 days per week, contract renewed annually based on funding.

Team: Fossil Finance

Compensation: Between £32,000 and £36,000 per annum. All team members are contracted on the same terms and conditions and paid an equitable compensation rate equivalent to a full-time salary of £40,000-£45,000 pro-rata at 5 days per week, regardless of role or level of experience.

Main responsibilities

You will support groups to: 

  • Develop their understanding of fossil finance and other liberation struggles
  • Skill up key organisers
  • Develop convincing messaging
  • Develop sustainable group structures and practices
  • Forge links to frontline communities
  • Organise actions that are effective and safe 
  • Build the relationships they need to work in coalition with other grassroots liberation groups. 

In addition to this, you will 

  • Spot strategic opportunities to introduce a fossil finance strategy to grassroots groups that might not otherwise be working on fossil financing.
  • Deliver trainings on Tipping Point’s training programme
  • Coordinate Defund Climate Chaos network meetings
  • Dedicate 0.25-0.5 days per week toward organisational development. This includes participation in a working group as well as other full team internal meeting spaces.

Essential criteria

Skills and knowledge

    • Ability to work autonomously. This role requires an ability to prioritise and self-direct your work as it relates to the fossil finance teams overall objectives.
    • Excellent people skills with the ability to listen, motivate, persuade and build relationships with people from a range of backgrounds within Tipping Point and outside of Tipping Point.
    • Excellent writing skills, especially the ability to communicate via email and create presentations and other documents (for example, slides for a training session or an agenda for a strategy meeting) in accessible and engaging ways.
    • Excellent analytical skills with the ability to spot strategic opportunities for coalition-building and taking action.
    • Excellent time management skills with the ability to self-manage, prioritise tasks effectively and coordinate with others.
    • Confidence facilitating meetings, and delivering and designing training sessions related to fossil finance.

Experience

  • Experience working in an autonomous environment. Tipping Point is a not-for-profit worker’s co-op where staff members are given a high level of trust and autonomy.
  • Experience working with activists and grassroots organisers.
  • Experience organising or campaigning on fossil finance targets.
  • Experience organising direct actions.
  • Experience using online organising spaces (e.g. Signal, WhatsApp, Action Network) to build community and collaborative working.

Personal attributes

  • A deep understanding of the nature of oppression and how it manifests in society and a commitment to collective liberation.
  • Ability to work autonomously and independently, using self-initiative and managing your own tasks.
  • A deep commitment to cooperative and collaborative ways of working.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience with digital campaigning and tools such as Action Network.
  • Experience in fundraising successfully, particularly in writing successful grant funding applications.
  • Experience in maintaining and developing excellent relationships with funders, preferably including writing reports to grant funders.
