Organising Principles

How we organise together to build people power and create a tipping point for climate justice

We ask that any group or individual wishing to collaborate and affiliate with Tipping Point commits to embody these principles and communicate them to their group members.

1. We seek justice for all

We work together with other movements for justice. We recognise that all oppression is connected and there can be no just climate solutions without people power, economic, racial, gender, social, health justice and workers rights.  Our movement recognises through its words and deeds that the climate crisis impacts frontline communities hardest of all and we stand in solidarity with their demands.

2. We are radical

As in, we tackle problems at their root.  We help people reimagine the systems and institutions that threaten our climate and communities.  We work with others to build grassroots power that challenges these systems at every level of government and society.

3. We build power through community

We create a tipping point for climate justice by engaging openly with our neighbours, friends, families, colleagues, classmates and faith communities.  We invite our community into the movement by asking for the help we need and welcoming everyone’s contributions.

4. We take bold action

We are committed to deeds, not just words. We inspire people to act with urgency by being bold and ambitious.  We strive to stay creative and nimble so that we can take regular action that serves and inspires our communities.

5. We are non-violent

We build the mass public support we need to create lasting change by winning hearts and minds, so we remain strategically nonviolent in deeds and words alike.

6. We build political power

We vote and encourage others to vote and participate in democratic processes to hold our decision-makers accountable. We are not party political. We show our decision-makers that they only have the power that people are willing to lend them.

7. We use our voices

We each have a unique human story about why we’re working for climate justice.  We use our voices to speak truth to power and we lift up the voices that most often get left out.

8. We try new things

We honour movements that came before us as we innovate new tactics for our time.   We experiment, we welcome imperfection, we share lessons and we strive to learn from honest mistakes.

9. We have fun

Any movement that isn’t fun isn’t worth being a part of”. We bring joy, art, song, dance, ceremony, ritual, humour, creativity and play into our activism. This lift our spirits, give us hope, and keeps us motivated for the hard challenges and inevitable victories ahead,

10. We respect and care for each other

As we build towards a society based on care and repair, we commit to unlearning harmful ways of being and to respect our own and each other’s limits. We bring our whole selves to this work by taking care of our body, mind, spirit and environment to the best of our ability so that we can sustain a powerful movement together.
